A song of love and war

di Emanuela Nava

Each day after school, Isa and Sima, and their classmates, play at waging war. Theirs is an imaginary war that is waged for fun, made of cardboard swords and fabric helmets. The children are divided into two factions; Isa is the general of his army, and his mission consists of saving his sweetheart, Sima. Having grown up learning the myths of the gods of Olympus, in particular Mars the god of war and Venus the goddess of beauty, Isa and Sima will eventually face the real war and experience all the hatred and sadness that it brings with it. Written in a poetic and dreamy language, rich in mythological and literary references, "A Song of Love and War" by Emanuela Nava is a vibrant story that lays bare the horrors and ugliness of war. The violence and suffering that come with the real war are in perennial contrast with the innocence and joy of childhood, that season of life in which children are truly able to see, even in a toy weapon, not an instrument of death but rather the means to hold high, like banners, the most valiant and noble feelings that belong to the human soul.
